29 April 2006 – Lyndhurst to Tring

Okay, forget anything good I said about British Rail. (grin)

The train to London from Brockhurst was delayed, so Martin and Sue took me to Southampton. That train was delayed by about an hour. It was a South West train, and they don’t have a baggage holder, so I had to take up two seats between me and my large case. I felt kind of bad about it, but there were others in the car who had done the same. I figured I was fine until London.

I wasn’t. For some reason the train terminated at Woking, about two stops shy of London. So our packed train had to exit and board another packed train.

At least this one was straight through to Waterloo. I had to stand, mainly because I didn’t want to drag my bag through the cars and it was only about a 20 minute ride.

And I shouldn’t have been worried about taking up two seats. The four sets of seats in front of me had one person and one bag each, although these bags (with one exception) would have fit in the rack above. When in Rome …

So. I’m in Waterloo trying to find the Underground. I succeed and on the map it looks like the most direct way to Euston is on the Northern Line. I make my way down to the platform only to find out that the Northern Line is closed for repairs.

Gaaaaa.

But a helpful train official tells me to go to Oxford Circus, change to the Victoria line, and then on to Euston. This, at least, turns out to be simple, as the platform I needed was directly across (and on the same level) as the platform on which I arrived.

I was grateful that Euston wasn’t crowded, and I easily made my way to platform 9 for the 13:04 train to Tring. It, at least, was on time and somewhat empty.

Not bad, except that I was scheduled to arrive in Tring at 13:17. Don’t think that’s going to happen, but I hope there are no more adventures along the way.
