I slept in until about 8:30, showered and had breakfast. We had fruit, fresh bread, and strong, strong coffee. If you add sugar, the expresso becomes almost chocolate-like.
It is insane to drive in Naples, so we took a bus to the office. The system is pretty simple. For €1 you get a ticket. On your first bus you place the ticket into a machine that will stamp the time, and then you can use the ticket for the next 90 minutes to travel on any of the buses.
We worked most of the morning, and in early afternoon we went out to a cafe for lunch. We sat outdoors, but to order you would go in and look at a large display of available dishes. I ordered a frittata, and while I probably demonstrated the pig of an American I am, I also got a plate of marinated mushrooms, eggplant and roasted peppers. Yum.
Afterward we wandered around a bit and ended up as Castel Nuovo. Now I have been to many places that called themselves castles, but this was the real thing: it looked like a castle. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a camera with me, so I didn’t take any pictures. There are some good ones on the internet (grin).
That night we went to a pizza restaurant. We had a wonderful, mild white wine with appetizers of fried cheese, zucchini and potatoes, with the main course being, well, pizza. I had a thick pizza that was more like a calzone. Pizza Margherita was invented in Naples: a simple pizza with tomatoes and mozzarella that was first served to Queen Margherita in a restaurant we passed on my first night in town.
Afterward we went to a gelateria for dessert. Everyone but me got chocolate, but I wanted a sorbetto limone. It was tasty. We then headed back to the house where I fell promptly asleep.
