It’s hard to believe, but the Drinking Man’s Bridge Club was starting in 1985, almost 20 years ago. Scott Gorsuch, who got us into bridge, had taken a year off to work, and his return marked our start. Since then we’ve tried to get together at least once a year for a long weekend to play cards, drink and keep in touch.
I always seem to be the one who instigates these things. It’s become harder since Scott started teaching high school (and thus has less vacation time). Since I was in town for LinuxWorld Expo (we won an award by the way) I imposed on Scott to hold one at his house.
The show was over on Thursday, and I took BART to get to Oakland from downtown. It was kinda funny – I was sitting with my large green suitcase on a crowded train. One guy, who I think was a lawyer, looked down and went “Man, you must have a really old laptop”.
Frank and Kevin had flown in, and Craig drove in from Reno.
Since then we’ve played about 35 rubbers of bridge, and we’re a little over halfway through. Not bad for a bunch of old folks.
