Europe 2013, Trip 1 – Things to Do in Machester When You Are Dead

I guess I need to finish out this series of posts, although not much happened after Sweden.

I flew back to London and found the bus I needed to get to my next stop: Oxford.

I made the classic mistake when Craig asked if I had ever been to Oxford before, and I said, yes, with you a couple of years ago, and he pointed out that had been Cambridge. Oops.

The hotel we stayed in was quaint, and I was very happy that we had chosen it when the wind and rain whipped up soon after I arrived since the price included dinner.

The dinner was very good, but I was totally frustrated by the lack of decent Internet access. What they called “broadband” was a joke and it both severely limited my ability to do work as well as chat with Andrea (I use Skype when I am on the road overseas). What made it suck more was that the name of the provider was “Taurus”.

The next morning we visited Sophos, one of our customers. They are a huge PC security company, mainly selling to corporations and educational institutions. It was a good meeting and I was glad we made the trip.

However, I had hoped to spend the week visiting other clients, but they all seemed to cancel on us at the last minute. Our last meeting was with Zen Internet on Friday, so we had some time to kill. I suggested we just drive up to Manchester (I was flying home from Manchester on Saturday morning) and spend Thursday working from the hotel.

So Craig and I took off for The North. If you have ever driven in the UK, it’s always funny to see the huge directional signs on the motorway that announce “The West” or “The North”. We drove up through Birmingham and past Leeds to make it to Manchester.

Manchester is a nice little town, but by this time I was pretty wiped. While Craig went off to see a production of “The Lion King” I grabbed dinner and slept. On Thursday we spent the day working, taking a lunch break to head over to the Hard Rock Cafe for a meal. There was a lot of Oasis gear on the walls (they are from Manchester) but other bands from the [Manchester Sound][1] were missing.

On Friday we had a nice visit with Zen in Rochdale and then we all went down to the pub for lunch and a pint. By this time I was developing a cold, so I was pretty happy when the day ended early. Craig dropped me off at the train station for the short trip back to Manchester and he headed home.

I slept most of Friday afternoon, went downstairs and got soup for dinner, and then slept some more. The flight home was uneventful.

Now, a few weeks at home before I head back to Yurrip for E2013T2 with stops in Fulda, Germany; Ã…sensbruk, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland.
