Finale Farm: Two Years In
Two years ago today we bought Finale Farm, our place in the Uwharrie Forest just south of Asheboro, North Carolina.
Our offer was accepted back in October of 2022, but the owner wanted to push the actual sale into 2023 for tax reasons. We didn’t end up moving into the place until July of 2023, but we did own it effective January 5th.
Andrea came up with the name. Our old place, Sortova Farm, was home for almost 24 years and we didn’t plan on moving, and once again we also don’t plan on moving from here (hence “finale”).
When my mother passed away I began to worry about my father, and started to look for places closer to us where he could move, and we even considered building a place on our property. However, when one is window shopping on realtor.com it is hard not to look at the inventory for other places, and we started looking at farms in the same county but just closer to Dad. Since I married well, after looking at one place Andrea pointed out that we didn’t need to limit ourselves to our current county (we both work remote) and so I started looking at places closer to Asheboro. Not only did we find a beautiful piece of property, it had both a daylight basement apartment (for my father) and an apartment above a detached garage (for Andrea’s mother). It’s rare that you find a place with three full kitchens, but we lucked out.
The downside was that the place was not set up as a farm. It had some hay fields that could easily be turned into pasture, but no out-buildings, barns or fencing. Hence the six month delay before we actually moved. For the horses we ended up building just a turn out shed initially since waiting for a barn to be finished would have added another six months. It was 20°F this morning I believe they are happy to be inside now that the barn was finished in the spring.
We finally got Sortova Farm on the market in July of 2024 and sold it in December, so this is now home for the foreseeable future. With natural beauty, gigabit fiber and relatively easy access to airports I can’t seen ever moving again, but never say never.
