When I got home from work on Friday (Freya’s Day) as soon as I let the dog out she ran off through the woods to the fence line. I could see something large and white over near the fence so I tromped through the trees only to find a dead buck deer.
Now Freya has been known to take out deer. I think we’re up to five or six, although they tended to be young fawns or does. She also takes out Guinea fowl, possums, rabbits … well, pretty much anything that has the ability to run from her (she tends to shy away from the copperhead snakes, thankfully).
This, however, was the first buck. He weighed near 100 pounds (Freya weighs in around 65), at least that’s what the dead weight felt like as I dragged him to the truck for disposal. I’m not sure exactly what happens, but it looks like she got him at the hip, and he either snapped his neck against the fence or bled out. He had three points – his initial spikes had just started to split.
We don’t encourage this behavior, but it is still amazing to see what she’s capable of doing. If you are not a stranger she’s one of the friendliest dogs you’ll ever meet. Just don’t run away. (grin)
