Of Beef and Chocolate

Last night I ate beef for the first time this year. Just after Christmas I received a gift of Omaha Steaks meat. I knew I was going to change my diet in the new year, so I worked hard to feed my family and friends with it before the end of 2010, but I still have some of it left over.

Since I usually cook steak on Valentine’s Day, I figured this would be a good opportunity to revisit beef, so I grilled two fillets along with a baked potato and a bunch of asparagus.

I cooked the steaks perfectly, but I only ended up eating half of mine. Instead of feeling like “oh God, steak!” it was more like “meh”. It was good, but not nearly as pleasurable as I thought it would be. I figured I’d stick the remainder on a salad but it may end up going to the dogs.

The twice baked potato was good, but the vegan cheese I bought to put on it was not (it didn’t melt). I ate a lot of asparagus.

The only trouble I had was dessert. Being Valentine’s I had to eat chocolate, and when I was in Lisbon my friend Alex brought me some Swiss chocolate by Frey. I broke off four little squares and gave two to Andrea, and the two I ate were simply heaven. It was a dark chocolate with a high cacao percentage and I got much more pleasure out of that small snack than half a fillet.

Sweets are going to be hard to avoid.
