Okay, yet another note to my non-existent audience. I guess that’s what I get for having friends with lives that can’t spend their whole day surfing web pages.
Anyway, I am getting a little carried away with the whole web thing. First, as you can read on the front page of this joint, “sortova.com” is the tentative name of our farm. I liked it, “sort of a” dot com, but if I ever needed to sound respectable, I could pronounce it “sore-tove-a”.
But I kept having this nagging feeling that someone was going to scoop my idea, and register “sortofa.com”. But I really couldn’t afford to register and maintain another domain name.
That is until I was directed to MyDomain. For fifty bucks, they will host your domain and forward both web requests as well as e-mail to whereever you want. Thus, if I had an account at Mindspring and my web page was “www.mindspring.com/~bubba”, I could register “bubba.com” with MyDomain and have it point to my Mindspring account. Since web space is often included in a dial-up account, I can have ghetto web hosting for $50. It would be very hard for anyone to casually notice that they were on a Mindspring server.
So, I registered sortofa.com and had it point to sortova.com. You can send mail to me at tarus@sortofa.com, drfilth@sortofa.com, whatever.
Well, that got good to me, so I decided to check out balog.com. For about $5 a year, they will allow you to set up a shared domain under their primary domain header. So I am now “tarus@balog.com” and you can access my web site from “http://tarus.balog.com”.
Fun. Fun. Fun.
You may be wondering “what about tarus.com?” Well, it turns out that there is a machine tool company up in the frozen midwest named after me. They are supposed to send me a T-shirt.
